Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
