Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of millions of people nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and another who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms more intense and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
