Conservative reactions to the limited release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices lamented how heavy redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Defends Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the American people about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo describing the redaction process.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's identity and likeness appear in some of the documents, the extensive black blocks prompt serious concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater openness.
“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly fails to comply with both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Disclosure
However, a segment of conservative pundits and former President loyalists came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—originating from a justice department led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the individuals shown in photographs have their identities blacked out.
Yet some are not, including high-profile figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, allowed some conservative figures to go on the offensive.
“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Statement
Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these documents for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Subdued
However, broader comment on the right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous calls for action that preceded the congressional approval to enact a bill requiring the documents' publication.
The commentator, who recently secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a complete release. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy folders of files that contained no previously unseen data.
