Together Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional body horror, but beneath Together resides a profound contemplation about how we choose to love one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The story commences when the couple relocate from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters face the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
